The Journal of Early Modern Studies is an interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed journal of intellectual history, dedicated to the exploration of the interactions between philosophy, science and religion in Early Modern Europe. It aims to respond to the growing awareness within the scholarly community of an emerging new field of research that crosses the boundaries of the traditional disciplines and goes beyond received historiographic categories and concepts.

JEMS publishes high-quality articles reporting results of research in intellectual history, history of philosophy and history of early modern

science, with a special interest in cross-disciplinary approaches. It furthermore aims to bring to the attention of the scholarly community as yet unexplored topics, which testify to the multiple intellectual exchanges and interactions between Eastern and Western Europe during the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The main language of the journal is English, although contributions in French are also accepted.



The Research Center for the Foundations of Modern Thought (FME) is aiming to create an adequate intellectual environment for the study of the 17th Century’s culture, science, society, spirituality and ideas.
The FME Centre gathers scholars and researchers from various fields of study; Graduate Students are invited to join them. The research themes are approached from a cross-disciplinary inquiry; philosophy, history of ideas, philosophy of science, art history are among the disciplines put into the practice of exploring the founding texts of Early Modern Europe.

Le but du Centre de Recherche Fondements de la modernité européenne est de créer un environnement intellectuel adéquat pour l’étude de la culture, des idées, de la sci
ence, de la société et de la spiritualité du XVIIe siècle européen, aussi bien que des périodes qui peuvent être mises en relation avec celui-ci.

Le Centre FME est formé par des universitaires et des chercheurs; les étudiants des dernières années sont invités à les joindre. Les thèmes de la recherche sont approchées à partir des perspectives différentes: la philosophie, l’
histoire des idées, la philosophie de la science, l’histoire de l’art se trouvent parmi les disciplines qui sont appelées, tour à t
our ou simultanément, à éclairer les textes fondateurs de la modernité européenne.
